Afghan weaving descends largely from Turkmen tradition, in which each tribe maintained its own gul, the octagonal emblem repeated across the field as a mark of identity; the guls here have loosened into diamonds but the ancestry remains legible. Tribal work of this kind is woven without a cartoon, the pattern carried entirely in memory, which accounts for the confident irregularity of the drawing and the slight variation between one medallion and the next.
