Description
$2,865. A deep burgundy field is filled with the weeping willow and cypress motif rendered in ivory as delicate vertical forms rising from a central vase, framed by a wide ivory and beige border populated with generous boteh and palmette ornament. The willow design carries a literary charge, taking its name from Majnun, the maddened lover of the Layla romance, whose emblem is the drooping willow; the pattern reads accordingly as an elegy rather than simple decoration. Agra was the seat of the Mughal imperial carpet workshops from Akbar's reign, and its weavers absorbed a vocabulary that has remained in continuous use since. The boteh, the teardrop form the West came to call paisley, is the most widely exported motif in textile history. Design pattern: Willow and cypress field with boteh border, Agra. Size: 6'0" x 9'3". Gallery Collection.
