Lynne Drexler (1928-1999) was an American painter whose luminous, color-rich compositions placed her among the second generation of Abstract Expressionists. Born in Newport News, Virginia, she studied at the Richmond Professional Institute and the College of William and Mary before moving to New York City in 1955. There, she attended Hans Hofmann’s School of Fine Arts and later studied with Robert Motherwell at Hunter College, who encouraged her to pursue painting professionally. “I could not stop painting once I got started,” Drexler recalled.
Immersed in the Greenwich Village art scene, Drexler frequented the influential 8th Street Club and Cedar Tavern and received a solo exhibition at the Tanager Gallery in 1961. Her distinctive paintings combine bold color, rhythmic form, and patch-like brushwork, often suggesting landscapes and organic forms. In her later years, Drexler settled on Monhegan Island, Maine, where the rugged coastal environment inspired an increasingly personal synthesis of abstraction and representation.
