A matched pair of novelty ashtrays constructed from ceramic. Each piece is modeled as a stylized gentleman in formal evening wear, featuring a black top hat and red bowtie, depicted in a state of inebriation. The figure is shown leaning against a central architectural pillar that supports a large, open ashtray bowl with notched cigarette rests at the rim. The figure holds a bottle in one hand and rests on a cane or umbrella with the other. The ashtrays are finished in a glossy black glaze with colorful cold-painted details applied over the glaze to define the facial features, bowtie, and white decorative drips on the central support. The undersides of the circular bases exhibit recessed, unglazed foot rings and central unglazed circular areas (images 6 and 12).
