This stunning woodblock depicts Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto on a rainy day, with softly blooming cherry trees. Publisher: Uchida, c1940s
Nisaburo Ito, with conflicting reports giving his birthdate as 1905 or 1910, was a painter and printmaker from the Kyoto area. Renowned for his creations portraying landscapes, famous Kyoto views, as well as depictions of flowers and birds, he specifically designed for the publisher Uchida.
In this work, Ito used the pillar posts in the image to title and seal the print. Additionally, the print bears the Uchida Publisher's watermark in the lower right margin under the mat. This large woodblock print, is dai-oban in size. In lay terms, the image measures approximately 10" x 13.5".
Note that we photographed the print both in and outside the frame for buyer's best view of the detail and subtlety of the artist's work.
