Description
This artwork " Landscape " 1939 is a watercolor on paper by noted California (German/American) artist Ernst Stolz, 1901-1989. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 12.75 x 17 inches, framed size is 19.5 x 23.5 inches. Custom framed in a wooden black frame, with off white matting. The artwork is in good condition, it has 3 vertical creases (See pictures #4 and #5) The frame is in very good condition, it has some very minor scratches.
About the artist:
Born in Augsburg, Germany Nov. 17, 1901. Stolz was raised in Munich and studied at the university there before immigrating to the U.S. in 1927. He lived in Michigan until 1930 when he settled in Berkeley, CA. After studying at the CCAC, he began painting in 1934. During the Depression he worked on various art projects for the WPA and as a draftsman for the Bechtel Corporation from 1950 until retirement in 1971. Stolz continued to paint until his demise in Berkeley on Dec. 9, 1989. Working in oil, watercolor, and acrylic, he painted in a style akin to the German Impressionist School. Exh: San Francisco Art Association, 1937; GGIE, 1939; St Mary's College (Moraga), 1970s (solo). The work of Ernst Stolz is held in numerous private collections in California and the U.S. as well as the Smithsonian Museum of Art in Washington DC.
