Description
A quintessential, mid century painting by renowned artist Jean Kalisch. The stylized harbor scene is depicted in signature shades of green and blue, oil on board, signed lower left. The art is linen-matted and framed in brown stained wood.
Jean Kalisch (1912-1995) was born in Japan. As a child, she was given instruction in Chinese calligraphy leading her to eventually develop a style characterized as 'an ingenious combination of Cubism and Impressionism.' A representationalist with a vivid, abstract imagination, she became known as a Cubist and a Colorist.
In the 1950s, Kalisch moved to California with her husband, Jules. In California, she exhibited in some of the leading galleries of the mid 20th century, including the San Francisco Museum, and received many awards and critical accolades during her lifetime. Contemporary sales of her work at auction include Sotheby's of New York City.
