Description
Leo Konig (1871-1944) (aka Leo Konig and Leo Von Konig) was a German painter who studied with Franz Lippisch and Ernest Hanke among others in Berlin. He took part in both the Munich Succession and the Berlin Succession movements in the early and mid 20th Century. His paintings are in many museum collections in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. This Portrait of a Young Boy is signed, upper right, L. Konig. (Note that the signature is difficult to read without special light.) There is a number, perhaps 32, just above and to the right of the signature.
Konig is particularly known for his portraits. This compelling image demonstrates his use of light, his soft, thick pigments, and his loose brush strokes. He was able to capture the personalities of his subjects. Here the boy is cheerful, with a smile and direct gaze that draws us in.
Konig traveled throughout Europe. The painting is framed in a double frame; the outer frame is stamped with the following: Roma Moulding 556086 Made in Italy..
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: The surface of the painting seems intact. However, there is a small patch on the rear of the canvas in the rear upper right quadrant. It is not visible on the front.
The two joined frames are well positioned together as a unit.
