Description
Original early 1800s hand colored botanical print that appeared in the "Magazine of Botany", a British horticultural journal published monthly from 1834 to 1849 by Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-1865), a British gardener, architect and engineer.
Shown on the print is the Red Bush Monkeyflower published in 1839. It measures 6 x 9
inches and is in excellent condition.
Paxton prints are notable for their use of an egg white wash (or glair) over the hand coloring to enhance the visual appeal and longevity of the artwork. The egg white tended to give a matt-velvet-like look to the hand coloring. Other botanical print series used a gum Arabic wash to preserve the hand-coloring.
This is an original hand-colored botanical lithograph - not a reproduction. It is carefully packaged in an archival plastic sleeve with backing board, and shipped in a cardboard flat mailer with cardboard insert. Includes a certificate with additional information and original page of accompanying text.
Multiple print purchases are combined into a single shipment which can reduce the total shipping charge.
