Original hand-colored botanical print from an early edition of "English Botany", the monumental work by James Sowerby that portrayed over 3000 plants native to the British Isles. Sowerby (1757-1822) was an English naturalist, artist, engraver and teacher.

On many of the prints you can see the indentation when the engraving plate was pressed onto the page to create a black on white image. This is called the "plate mark". The print would then be hand colored.
