A wonderfully whimsical pair of circa 1970s Godinger salt and pepper shakers modeled as traditional tiered pagodas. Executed in silver plate, each miniature structure is surprisingly detailed, from its ribbed projecting roofs and tiny architectural openings to the pointed finial crowning the top.

They are functional tableware, but their sculptural quality makes them equally appealing as small decorative objects. I particularly like them incorporated into a well-set dining table alongside blue and white porcelain, bamboo flatware, or antique silver-or left together on a drinks tray or dining-room console between uses.

Their combination of Chinoiserie influence and polished silver gives the pair enough personality to work beautifully in Palm Beach, English country, and more eclectic traditional interiors.
