Description
Two English Arts brass jugs in the Arts and Crafts style with distinctive embossed crocodile skin surface decoration. The pitchers were manufactured by Joseph Sankey and Sons, Ltd., of Bilston, Staffordshire, and date circa 1920s. The company described the form as a "hot water jug" in period advertising. Both feature a sleek, tapering shape with wire-wrapped upper and lower rims and swooping riveted handles.
The larger pitcher is 11.25 in. height (to top of spout and handle) marked on the base with Sankey's "JS&SB" initials with the number "4". The smaller pitcher measures 8.75 in. height (to top of handle) marked on the base with "J(?)S8SB" with the number "2". Both are in good condition with some surface wear and scattered dark spots.
Joseph Sankey & Sons (JS&S) was an English art metal firm operating circa 1896 through the early 1930s. JS&S manufactured domestic hollowware objects in brass, copper, and chrome including decorative trays and salvers, ewers, tea caddies, watering cans, and jardinieres.
