Description
This is a substantial hand-carved African Blackwood storage box from Tanzania, featuring deeply carved relief panels of giraffes and savanna motifs on all four sides and on the lid. The box is crafted from solid Mpingo, one of the densest and most valuable hardwoods in East Africa, renowned for its exceptional weight, durability, and deep black coloration with warm brown undertones.
Measuring 13 inches wide, 8 inches high, and 8 inches deep, the box has an unexpectedly heavy feel due to the extreme density of Dalbergia melanoxylon. The lid is fitted with original metal hinges and opens to reveal a two-section interior, including a removable inner tray also carved in blackwood. The exterior relief depicts a cohesive scene of giraffes grazing and walking beneath acacia branches, rendered in a stylized geometric texture pattern typical of mid-century Tanzanian workshop carving. The craftsmanship is bold and expressive, combining narrative relief with a strong architectural form.
The box is priced at the appraised value, reflecting the large size and substantial weight of genuine African Blackwood, with fully carved relief panels on three sides, good condition with a functional lid and tray, Tanzanian origin, and mid-20th-century craftsmanship.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: The box is in good, stable condition with honest age wear. The structure remains solid, with no significant cracks or repairs. Some minor surface abrasions, small edge rubs, and light wear near the corners and lid edges are consistent with age and use. The hinges function properly and appear original. The relief carving remains crisp, with strong detail and well-preserved texture. Interior surfaces show natural wear from use, typical of older blackwood boxes.
No signs of insect activity, structural instability, or modern restoration are present. Overall, it remains an attractive, well-preserved example of traditional Tanzanian blackwood carving.
