Description
This is beautiful, and rare textile from the Pacific Island of Tonga. This particular textile is called "ngatu" or referred to as barkcloth. It's a very soft almost felt like feel made from the inside bark of the mulberry tree. Used to be commonly made in Asia, Africa, and Pacific. So ancient is art of making the cloth, that it is deeply involved in religious and ceremonial life. Also often used in gifting and traditional rituals. This piece is from early to mid 20th. C . Very beautiful and intricate. In overall very good condition. Has some minor fraying, marks. Great for the textile collector, or lover of natural and organic decor. Huge size : 85.5" L , 77" W , .01 " D (aprox. 7 feet by 6.5 ft.) Makes an incredible wall hanging, but can be used in a variety of ways .
