The cover features an atomic-themed cachet titled "Salute to the Nation's Accomplishments in Space" and bears a 5-cent Gemini spacecraft commemorative stamp canceled at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on September 29, 1967, the official first day of issue.

James A. McDivitt (1929–2022) was a NASA astronaut who commanded Gemini 4 in 1965, the mission during which Ed White performed America's first spacewalk. McDivitt later commanded Apollo 9 in 1969, the crucial Earth-orbit mission that successfully flight-tested the Lunar Module before the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing. He was subsequently promoted to Manager of Lunar Landing Operations, helping oversee NASA's Apollo program during its most significant achievements.
