Fred Haise inscribed and autographed United Nations First Day Cover commemorating the peaceful uses of outer space, signing "Fred Haise Apollo 13 CMP" in bold black ink across the center. The Artmaster cachet features a stylized olive branch set against a celestial background together with a 4-cent United Nations "Peaceful Uses of Outer Space" commemorative stamp canceled at United Nations Headquarters in New York on December 3, 1962, the official first day of issue.

Fred W. Haise Jr. (born 1933) is a NASA astronaut best known as the Lunar Module Pilot on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Following the catastrophic oxygen tank explosion, Haise and his crewmates worked with Mission Control to safely return to Earth in one of the most remarkable survival stories in space exploration history. Although the lunar landing was aborted, Apollo 13 became known as NASA's "successful failure" and remains one of the agency's greatest demonstrations of ingenuity and teamwork.
