John Glenn autographed First Day Cover commemorating the "Exploring the Moon" 18-cent United States postage stamp, postmarked at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on May 21, 1981, the official first day of issue. The cachet features an illustration of an Apollo astronaut standing on the lunar surface beside the Lunar Module with the printed caption, "Manned Exploration of the Moon." Glenn has boldly signed the cover in blue ink.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. (1921-2016) was an American Marine Corps aviator, test pilot, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard Friendship 7 during NASA's Mercury program, making him one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and a national hero. Following his NASA career, Glenn served four terms in the United States Senate from 1974 to 1999. In 1998, at the age of 77, he returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to travel into space and the only Mercury astronaut to fly on a Space Shuttle mission.
