About the Artist: Ivan Vasilievich Kliun (1873-1943) was a Russian avant-garde painter, sculptor, and art theorist born near Moscow, whose close friendship with Kazimir Malevich beginning in 1907 drew him into the heart of the Suprematist movement. Kliun exhibited alongside Malevich in the landmark "0,10" exhibition of 1915-16 and helped found the Supremus artist group, producing geometric, non-objective compositions that remain central to the history of Russian avant-garde art. He later taught at the Vkhutemas art school in Moscow before his death in 1943.
