Frank H. Sweet was a New York based folk painter, born in Middleville, NY, about 10 miles north of Mohawk. This charming 19th-century oil painting on board is of an old mill along a river.
Frank H. Sweet made his money by painting commissions of local farms and other locations in his area. As a youth, his right side was permanently paralyzed by an overdose of medicine. He was taken to school in a cart. Later in life he was a teacher.
