James Franklin Seagle (1886–1941), Catawba Valley, North Carolina, signed stoneware cream riser, of tall cylindrical form with rolled rim and warm streaked alkaline glaze. Seagle learned to turn pottery from his father, Daniel Seagle, one of the early Catawba Valley potters, and later assumed operation of the family pottery, developing it into a substantial business that at times employed as many as ten workers. His work continued the utilitarian alkaline-glazed stoneware tradition established by his family in the nineteenth century.
