Description
Category: Twisted Clay Melon-Ribbed Long-Neck Decorative Vase from Ancient KilnShape & FormThis is a classic small long-neck ornamental vase. It features a flared rim, an elongated neck that smoothly transitions down to a bulbous melon-ribbed belly, finished with a steady ring foot at the base. Well-proportioned and elegant, it embodies the design concept of "grand bearing in a small vessel". Though compact in size, it stands upright and imposing with soft, flowing contours. The melon ribbing is distinctly layered, shaped meticulously by hand. In ancient times, such vases were used for flower arrangement on desks and as quiet ornaments in scholar’s studios. Surviving specimens of this type are scarce and highly recognizable among collectors.Twisted Clay & Glaze CraftsmanshipThe vessel adopts the signature twisted clay technique. Yellow and brown clays are kneaded and intertwined, forming unique swirling natural veining after firing. The fluid streaks never repeat, presenting one-of-a-kind handcrafted texture that defines twisted clay porcelain. The exterior is fully covered in yellow glaze, glossy, translucent and lustrous, covered all over with fine natural crackles formed over centuries. Only minor natural glaze loss appears partially on the belly, resulting from long-term burial abrasion, which does not spoil the overall integrity. The rest of the glaze remains in excellent condition with mellow, aged sheen.Craftsmanship & ConditionThe whole piece is entirely handmade: clays are twisted and kneaded before being wheel-thrown into the melon-ribbed silhouette. The internal twisted veins integrate seamlessly, and the foot is trimmed neatly in an antique style with distinct marks of ancient production techniques. The artifact is free of cracks, chips or later restorations, with only slight natural glaze wear. It retains its original unearthed/handed-down condition without artificial polishing or glaze retouching.Twisted clay wares are extremely difficult to fire with low yield rates. Intact small melon-ribbed vases like this one with well-preserved glaze luster are rarely seen on the market.
