He is celebrated for assembling a legendary repository of mid-century Japanese prints, known to art historians as the "Jewel Box" collection. Hasegawa's immediate circle was deeply embedded in the Sosaku-Hanga (Creative Print) movement, a 20th-century artistic phenomenon where artists insisted on being the sole creators of their work - hand-carving, inking, and printing their own blocks rather than relying on traditional multi-person commercial workshops.
