The issue of a works history has proven especially problematic in the 20th Century,. Note: For example: Decades of suppression under Stalin and the promotion of official Socialist Realism resulted in many early abstract and futurist works being hoarded or stored away quietly and too often lack clear paper trails or history. There was a well publicized exhibition a few years ago of Russian works, controversy broke out criticizing some of the authorships and litigation followed. This work was not part of that exhibition.

Serge Charchoune was a Russian-born painter who became a central figure in the Parisian avant-garde. After emigrating from Russia, he settled in France in the 1910s, where he became the first Russian artist associated with the Dada movement. His work evolved fluidly between Cubism, abstraction, and representational modes, often distinguished by bold color gradations and rhythmic, geometric structures.

His work is represented in major collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.
