Russian Suprematist geometric abstract oil on canvas painting. Vertical composition with intersecting black and white bands and a large rust-toned circular form surrounding an ochre center, set against a dark ground. Signed lower right “Rodchenko.” Presented in a simple frame.

In the years following the Russian Revolution, Alexander Rodchenko focused on painting, industrial design, and graphic design. Rodchenko shared a Moscow studio with his wife, artist Varvara Stepanova. The couple moved into their apartment in 1922, and little there has changed since 1935. He was then a leading figure in the Constructivist Group within Inkhuk, the Institute of Artistic Culture, founded in 1920 with support from Kandinsky. Committed to freeing art from its bourgeois associations, he later moved away from the Constructivist methods in painting and sculpture for which he remains best known.
