Summary:
Jean Pougny / Ivan Puni (1892-1956) Attributed Russian Suprematism Futurist abstract composition with broken chain. Signed lower left. Oil painting on panel.

This work comes from a large collection which had been extensively exhibited, commented upon. Some works from that exhibition were challenged and authorship brought into question. This work was not part of that exhibition. This work exhibits age and has definite wear from handling. The craquelure patterns recite age and do not have the character of having been artificially induced. All said, the work appears to be correct to the period and style. The condition is fair. (see images). it's good work, but scholarly research to solidify its authorship and a good cleaning seem in order.

Jean Pougny studied in several workshops, including the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1915, Ivan Puni joined the Supremus group, led by Kazimir Malevich, alongside other avant-garde artists such as Aleksandra Ekster, Liubov Popova, Ivan Kliun, Ksenia Boguslavskaya, Olga Rozanova, Nadezhda Udaltsova, and Nina Genke. In 1920, Puni and Ksenia Boguslavskaya emigrated first to Germany and then, in 1923, to France. After settling in France, Ivan Puni adopted the name Jean Pougny.
