Attributed to Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger (Dutch, c. 1676–1744), Oil on panel depicting a lively tavern interior populated by numerous figures drinking, conversing, and gathering around tables.

Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger was a Dutch painter particularly known for humorous and sometimes satirical genre scenes depicting taverns, peasants, drinkers, and crowded interiors. He received training from Pieter Fransz de Grebber; however, his work was strongly influenced by that of his father, Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder (1634–1704), whose own genre painting reflected the influence of artists including Adriaen Brouwer and David Teniers the Younger.

Heemskerck subsequently moved to London, where he established himself and continued producing the tavern and peasant subjects for which he became known. His compositions frequently feature densely arranged groups of animated figures within dark interiors, illuminated by carefully placed areas of light and color.

Opinion: Based upon our research and examination of the work, we believe the present painting fits well within the body of genre subjects and stylistic tradition for which Egbert van Heemskerck the Younger is known.
