Summary:
Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923), Reclining Female Figure. Charcoal and white chalk on beige paper.

Steinlen is best known for his illustrated advertisements and iconic posters depicting cabaret and music hall performers. In his later work for illustrated journals—similar in spirit to that of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec—his imagery became increasingly satirical and socially critical. Montmartre and its surrounding neighborhoods, where Steinlen maintained his permanent home, were recurring subjects throughout his career. He frequently depicted scenes of working-class life, capturing the rhythms of everyday Paris.

Steinlen’s works are represented in major museum collections worldwide, including the Hermitage Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
