Harry Herman Roseland was an American painter best known for his genre scenes depicting intimate portrayals of everyday life, subjects in domestic settings after the Civil War. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Roseland was largely self-taught but studied briefly with established artists such as John Bernard Whittaker and William Merritt Chase.

Roseland gained recognition for his emotionally compelling and narrative-driven works, often capturing themes of compassion, hardship, and human connection. His most notable series features African American women performing palm readings or offering comfort to white women—images that became widely reproduced as lithographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association and received several awards during his career. Today, Roseland’s work is valued for both its artistic quality and its sociocultural insight into American life during his era.
