Born in Odessa, Nicolas Issaiev was a painter, illustrator, and theater decorator. He served in the army during World War I and moved to Belgrade in 1919, where he worked as a decorator for the National Theatre. In 1925, he settled in Paris and studied at the Académie Ranson. His work included landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and later more modernist compositions. Issaiev exhibited in Brussels, Paris, and Belgrade. Following World War II, he lived for periods in Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. During the 1950s and 1960s, he exhibited at several Parisian galleries and participated in a 1961 exhibition devoted to Russian artists of the School of Paris.
