Summary:
Monumental monochromatic lithographic proof for Pal’s celebrated Belle Époque poster advertising La Belle Otero at the Alcazar d’Été in Paris, circa 1896. Printed in brown or sepia ink and depicting the dancer in an elaborate theatrical costume, with outlined title lettering and the printed device of Caby & Chardin, 17 Passage Daudin, Paris, at the lower left. The composition corresponds to the known color lithographic poster, which was issued with yellow, black, blue, red and white passages. This impression appears to represent a trial, working or progressive proof produced before the application of the poster’s complete color separations. Signed in the image.
