Summary:
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901), “Divan Japonais,” lithographic advertising poster for the celebrated Parisian café-concert at 75 rue des Martyrs. The composition depicts dancer Jane Avril seated beside critic Édouard Dujardin, with the distinctive black-gloved figure of performer Yvette Guilbert appearing onstage in the background. Created for the Divan Japonais, a fashionable Montmartre entertainment venue, the image is among Toulouse-Lautrec’s most recognizable poster compositions and reflects the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e prints on late 19th-century French graphic design. Older poster lithograph mounted on some type of panel backing, has some old wrinkles and some evidence of old restoration, but does show well.
Printed in black, yellow, orange and gray tones, with “Divan Japonais / 75 rue des Martyrs” across the upper portion and “Ed. Fournier / Directeur” at lower left. Toulouse-Lautrec’s printed monogram/signature appears at lower right. Printer’s credit along the lower edge reads “IMP. EDW. ANCOURT. PARIS.”
The poster is presented unframed and mounted or laid to a red backing board. Visible age-related toning, staining, creasing, handling wear, edge losses and other imperfections are present, particularly along the margins.
Measurement: 36 1/4 x 27 1/4 in. (92.1 x 69.2 cm.) approx
