Summary:
After Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725-1805), La Cruche cassée (The Broken Pitcher). Oil on panel based upon Greuze’s celebrated composition of circa 1771-1772, now in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris.

The composition depicts a young woman in a pale dress gathering roses in her apron, with additional flowers ornamenting her bodice and hair. This example is particularly interesting for its reversed orientation, presenting Greuze’s familiar composition in mirror image rather than following the orientation of the Louvre painting.

Presented in an oval carved and giltwood frame surmounted by a decorative ribbon and bow crest.
