The original printed 8vo pamphlet, illustrated with a full-page photographic reproduction (after Man Ray) of the ruins of the Ch?teau de Sade at Lacoste, Vaucluse, and concluding with the collective declaration dated Paris, 21st June 1947, signed in print by approximately fifty members and associates of the Surrealist movement, including Andr? Breton, Hans Bellmer, Victor Brauner, Georges Henein, Jacques H?rold, Marcel Jean, Robert Lebel, Pierre Mabille, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Toyen, Isabelle and Patrick Waldberg and Rams?s Younane. The final leaf bears the striking typographical advertisement ?Mettez la vie en CAUSE?, listing Surrealist groups established throughout the world and naming Sarane Alexandrian, Georges Henein and Henri Pastoureau as the secretariat of the French group. The publisher's imprint records that the pamphlet was completed on 4th July 1947 by Imprimerie Union, Paris. With a red ink stamp, ?LE SURR?ALISME?, applied across the printed quotation beneath the title Cause on the front wrapper and title page. Rupture inaugurale was one of the defining political declarations of post-war Surrealism. Adopted on 21st June 1947, at the beginning of the Cold War, it reaffirmed the movement's revolutionary aspirations while decisively rejecting submission to the French Communist Party and Stalinism, declaring that Surrealist activity was incompatible with political dependence upon the Communist Party. At the same time, the signatories refused to abandon the revolutionary tradition itself, seeking instead an independent position in which social revolution and the liberation of the imagination remained inseparable. The declaration culminates in the characteristically uncompromising assertion ?LE SURR?ALISME EST CE QUI SERA? (Translation: ?Surrealism is what will be?)
