MUNCH EDVARD: (1863-1944) Norwegian painter. A.L.S., Edvard Munch, to the recto of a plain postcard, n.p. (Aasgaardstrand, Vestfold, Norway), n.d. (13th November 1904), to Bruno Cassirer, in German. Munch informs his correspondent that he has influenza although nevertheless he will travel to Berlin in three days' time to see him. Hand addressed by Munch to the verso. Two file holes to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and covered by two small squares of paper to the verso. A brief letter with good association. VG
Bruno Cassirer (1872-1941) German publisher and gallery owner in Berlin who had a considerable influence on the cultural life of the city.
Munch's relationship with the Cassirer family was particularly important in 1904. Following the separation of cousins Paul and Bruno Cassirer in 1901, Munch entered into an agreement with Bruno Cassirer for the German publication and sale of his graphic work, while Paul Cassirer promoted his paintings through his Berlin gallery. A major exhibition of Munch's work was subsequently held at Paul Cassirer's gallery in Berlin from December 1904 to January 1905.
