FAULKNER WILLIAM: (1897-1962) American writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1949. Blue ink signature and date, Sao Paolo, 10th [August] 1954, to a small 8vo printed title page removed from a joint edition of Sanctuary and Requiem for a Nun (most likely the first joint printing of the works, published by Signet in March 1954). Attractively matted in off white with gold borders alongside an image of Faulkner seated outdoors in a half-length pose. 13 x 8.5 overall. Some very light, minor age wear, VG

Faulkner made his only visit to Sao Paulo, during his first trip to Latin America, from 9th to 14th August 1954 as a delegate to the International Congress of Writers. The event coincided with the quadricentennial (400th anniversary) of the city's founding. The Nobel Laureate´s visit is a well-known literary anecdote in Brazil, often remembered for Faulkner´s legendary reticence and his heavy consumption of whiskey during the trip. It even inspired a book and play titled William Faulkner no Brasil by Marco Antonio Fabiani.
