Berthier refers to the Emperor?s order, appointing General Petit as Commander of the infantry warehouses in Dresden; Cesar Berthier (1765-1819) French General, Governor of Piedmont and Chief of the House of Pope Pius VII when prisoner in Savonia. A.L.S., one page, folio, Modena, 27th April 1801. Berthier states in part `..I need a carriage to transport my personal belongings to Florence where I have been ordered to move..? With a red ink stamp; and Victor Leopold Berthier (1770-1807) French General who died at the early age of 36 as a result of putrid fevers catched at the war front.
