Description
A most charming and richly decorated authentic antique Japanese lacquered kodansu (tabletop cabinet / jewelry box) with original patina
Japan, late Meiji Period (1868-1912)
Exquisitely hand-crafted workmanship and artistry, almost certainly made for export to the United States or Europe as the desire for exotic Far East products and Japonisme popularity peaked during the late Victorian / Aesthetic Movement in the late 19th / early 20th century.
Featuring an ornate metal mounted rectangular case finish on all sides in rich black lacquer with parcel gilt incised ornamentation, hand painted floral foliate motif and rare early Japanese photograph of an iconic Geisha in customary dress.
Diminutive small-scale / petite size table cabinet (jewelry casket) having a single cabinet door opening to reveal an interior fitted with three drawers, affixed with a carry handle on the top, and a lock to the front athough the key has been lost to time. circa 1890-1910
Dimensions (approx):
