Earl (of) Mansfield

Rare. The Earl of Mansfield is a title within the British peerage. The most famous holder of this title was William Murray, who became the 1st Earl of Mansfield (1705?1793). He was a prominent British jurist and politician, serving as Lord Chief Justice of England from 1756 to 1788.William Murray was born in Scotland and studied law at the University of Oxford. He rose to prominence as a barrister and was eventually appointed as Solicitor General and then Attorney General. In 1756, he was elevated to the position of Lord Chief Justice of England, which made him one of the most influential figures in the British legal system.As Lord Chief Justice, Mansfield presided over numerous landmark cases and played a significant role in shaping English common law. He is particularly remembered for his judgments in cases related to commercial law, property rights, and slavery.
