Merritt Mauzey (Am. 1898-1973), Parker Ranch in Winter, Texas, 1939, oil on board 24 x 30, signed lower right: Mauzey, Merritt Mauzey's landmark 1939 oil painting, Parker Ranch in Winter, Texas, stands as a distinguished example of Lone Star Regionalism. Closely associated with the Dallas Nine, the painting was exhibited at the 10th Annual Dallas Allied Arts Exhibition, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, in 1939, alongside works by Alexandre Hogue, Jerry Bywaters, and Otis Dozier, placing it within a defining era of Texas Regionalist art. The years prior to 1943 represented the artist's finest period, when Mauzey received widespread recognition through prominent museum exhibitions throughout the 1930s. In 1943, Mauzey accepted employment with a rubber manufacturing company; prolonged chemical exposure caused health problems that diminished his artistic production and affected the quality of his artwork from 1943 to 1962. Created in 1939, when the artist was at the height of his artistic powers, Parker Ranch in Winter, Texas represents the strength of Mauzey's mature vision and is particularly distinguished by its documented exhibition history, a rarity among his surviving major paintings. The painting depicts a West Texas ranch house amid evolving agricultural structures, capturing the transition from open-range cattle ranching to modern agricultural practices. Through a restrained palette, balanced composition, and direct Regionalist realism, Mauzey portrayed the resilience of rural Texans during the hardships of the Great Depression and severe winter conditions. His continued exploration of Texas ranch life through artwork and his publication, Texas Ranch Boy, further established his role as an important visual historian of early Texas life. Parker Ranch in Winter, Texas remains a defining achievement for the artist, uniting artistic accomplishment, historical documentation, and the enduring importance of exceptional and rare examples of Texas Art. This painting retains the original Merritt Mauzey frame.
