Description
12 3/8 x 12 3/8 in (31.5 x 31.5 cm)
Provenance and Authentication:
According to the Letter of Authenticity (LOA) and Certificate of Authenticity (COA) provided by the consignor, this collectible was subjected to a forensic examination. The accompanying documentation states that the signatures were evaluated with reference to multiple characteristics, including ink deposition, material and aging characteristics, stylistic consistency, and historical context. Based on the examination described in these documents, the authentication provider concluded that the findings were consistent with the attributed signatures. The LOA and COA provided by the consignor accompany the lot.
This Bad LP bears a large Michael Jackson signature across the front cover. Released in 1987, Bad remains one of the defining albums of Jackson's career, featuring such landmark recordings as "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," "Dirty Diana," and "Smooth Criminal."
The signature occupies the light field to the right of Jackson's portrait, extending through and around the distinctive red "BAD" lettering and toward the vertically printed "MICHAEL JACKSON" title. Its placement provides substantial writing space while leaving the principal portrait unobstructed, producing a particularly effective presentation.
The handwriting displays several noteworthy characteristics for comparison with documented Michael Jackson signing habits. The upper portion is dominated by an enlarged initial construction and looping movement, followed by rapidly compressed connected forms through the central portion. The lower section develops into a broad sweeping curve accompanied by pronounced descending and extended strokes. Variations in letter height, compression, connectivity, writing rhythm, and the unusually elongated terminal movements give the inscription a highly individualized visual structure.
The choice of Bad itself adds considerable thematic strength. Rather than an unrelated autograph surface, the signature appears directly upon one of the albums most closely associated with Jackson's peak recording career. The combination of the iconic cover portrait, immediately recognizable album artwork, and prominent signature gives the piece strong visual presence within Michael Jackson and popular-music memorabilia collecting.
