Description
Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) was an American photographer, publisher, and influential advocate for modern art who played a pivotal role in establishing photography as a recognized form of artistic expression. Throughout his five-decade career, Stieglitz advanced the status of photography through his own work, as well as through his influential writings, publications, and exhibitions.

In addition to his achievements as a photographer, Stieglitz was renowned for the New York galleries he operated in the early twentieth century, through which he introduced and promoted the work of numerous European avant-garde artists to American audiences. His galleries and publications became important platforms for the development of modernism in the United States. Stieglitz was also married to the celebrated American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, whose artistic career and relationship with Stieglitz became an important part of American modernist art history.

In late 1892, Stieglitz purchased his first handheld camera, a Folmer & Schwing 4 × 5 camera. He subsequently gained recognition for his photographic work and for his writings in photographic journals, through which he advocated for photography to be regarded as an independent form of artistic expression rather than merely a means of mechanical documentation.

The present work, Equivalent, belongs to Stieglitz’s celebrated series of cloud photographs. By photographing clouds against the open sky and removing identifiable geographical references, Stieglitz transformed natural phenomena into an abstract visual language. The series reflects his sustained exploration of the relationship between photography, emotion, thought, and subjective experience.

Equivalent exemplifies Stieglitz’s modernist approach to photography.
