Description
Roger Ballen (b. 1950) is an American-born artist who has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa, and its surrounding areas since the 1970s. Spanning more than five decades, his artistic practice began in documentary photography before evolving into the creation of distinctive fictionalized worlds that incorporate photography alongside film, installation, theatre, sculpture, painting, and drawing.

Ballen’s oeuvre is inhabited by marginalized figures, animals, found objects, wires, and childlike drawings, which converge within ambiguous and psychologically charged environments. His work deliberately blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction, creating unsettling yet highly imaginative worlds that resist conventional interpretation.

Ballen describes his works as existential psychodramas that engage the subconscious and evoke the darker dimensions of the human condition.
