Description
Gustavo Novoa's 'Two Zebras Courting' painting is a compendium of Primitive and Surrealism styles. This piece is unique in its bold color schema and drips with surrealistic imagery.
From the two main protagonists gazing straightforwardly to the other, to the blue cockatiels (boldly rendered as not-quite background participants), no doubt to the beautifully drawn tropical blooms and greenery, in the form of tall grass and unfurled green leaves. The flowers stand ready to emit sweet intoxicating fragrance while the green foliage plays its part in fanning the flames of desire.
There are no passive elements within this painting. Every element seems vested and indeed desirous for the mating ritual to begin.
This pieces' bold use of primary colors evokes a deeply surrealistic experience. Its iridescence adds yet another whimsical element.
Wrapped in a mossy-green crushed velvet matte and clad in deeply textural and gold filigreed wood frame, this piece is a fantastical show-stopper.
Likely painted sometime between the 1960s and 1970s, as Gustavo Novoa had, by the 1980s, moved on from the inspirations of the Jungle, towards his next fascination, the American southwest, its Pueblos, and what became known as his Adobe period.
