Description
Original 19th-century hand-tinted folio lithograph from Egypt & Nubia From Drawings Made on the Spot by David Roberts, R.A., published by F. G. Moon in London, 1849, with lithography by Louis Haghe.
Other David Roberts Egypt & Nubia lithographs from the same series are available in my shop and pair beautifully for gallery arrangements.
Roberts sketched the Temple of Edfou on site in 1838 under intense heat, later noting in his journal both the difficulty of the conditions and the irresistible beauty of the pronaos. The composition emphasizes the column capitals - lotus and palm forms rising from sand - lending the scene a quiet monumentality.
This is a Standard Edition folio, identifiable by the marginal title printed in tint-stone ink rather than black, a characteristic feature of the SE series, particularly associated with the Cairo plates.
Retains early or original matting, with the folio title label preserved on the reverse. A restrained, architectural plate well suited to collectors interested in the documentary and artistic achievements of Roberts' Egyptian work.
