Description
Exceptional 19th-century carved and polychrome-painted wooden cigar store Indian attributed to noted New York show-figure carver Thomas V. Brooks (1828-1895). The standing chief is depicted in Brooks desirable Leaner form, wearing a tall feathered headdress, large earrings, necklace, belted tunic and leggings, with one arm supported by a carved war club and the opposite hand holding a carved presentation tray advertising tobacco. The figure retains a wonderfully aged painted surface with strong facial features and extensive carved detail throughout. Perched on a tiered wooden pedestal, decorated with hand-painted Native American landscape scenes including a canoe and encampment on the upper tier and a wooded landscape on the lower section. Base is 20" W X 20" D X 17" T, Figure is 54" Tall
