Crafted during the turn-of-the-century golden era of American precision instrument making, this early 1900s 5-inch mining transit is signed by Bausch, Lomb, Saegmuller Co. of Rochester, New York, with patent dates of September 1, 1903, and January 30, 1906, and serial number 6227. Featuring a solid brass housing with black lacquered accents, a vertical arc, level vials, and integrated compass dial, it represents superior turn-of-the-century engineering and includes its original fitted finger-jointed wooden transport case with leather strap, historical collection inventory document. The instrument presents in clean, display-ready condition with minor finish tarnish, lacquered surface wear, and light age-related rubbing consistent with authentic field work; the fitted wooden case demonstrates moderate external scuffing, scratches, and leather strap age wear, while small pieces including decorative latch hardware, screws, and a vernier scale plate are detached and housed separately in a baggie.
