An exceptional antique 6-inch transit theodolite by Troughton & Simms, Ltd. (London, England), crafted circa 1916–1921. This precision scientific survey instrument features solid brass, bronze, and optical elements, housed in its fitted mahogany carrying box complete with striding level, trough compass, mounting plate, illuminator lantern, right-angle eyepiece, and extra lenses. An interior service label documents professional repair and adjustment by Cooke, Troughton & Simms, Ltd. in York, England, in April 1948. The instrument exhibits minor surface oxidation, cosmetic wear, and light scuffing consistent with age and field use; the fitted wooden case shows external scuffs, surface loss, and is missing its leather carrying strap (retaining the side mounting loops), with no key included.
