This exceptional 19th-century scientific glass apparatus showcases the brilliant craftsmanship of Edward S. Ritchie of Boston, a premier mid-to-late Victorian maker of philosophical and educational scientific instruments. Commonly known as an "Electric Egg" or a specialized vacuum aurora globe, this piece features a classic hand-blown, ovoid-shaped clear glass vessel encasing an internal metal electrode rod that terminates in a brass terminal knob at the top. The lower brass fittings feature a beautifully stamped turn-valve key cleanly marked with the maker's name and location: "E.S. RITCHIE / BOSTON." The entire assembly rests on a heavily weighted, handsomely turned black-and-gold painted base, exemplifying the era's devotion to making physics equipment visually stunning. Objectively assessing the item's physical condition, the glass remains remarkably clear and free of cracks or star fractures, though light interior dust is present. The original brass elements show a gorgeous, authentic warm patina with minor surface oxidation, tarnish, and tiny scuffs appropriate for its age.
