Marcus Aurelius Root’s Gallery of Daguerreotypes, located at 140 Chestnut Street (at the corner of Fifth Street) in Philadelphia, was one of the most celebrated and highly decorated photography studios in 19th-century America. Root purchased the studio on June 20, 1846, from John Jabez Edwin Mayall and successfully operated it into the mid-1850s, famously capturing what he called "the shadow of the soul" on silvered plates. From the Allen Koenigsberg collection.
