RAW project (Re-imaging the Arts in Wynwood) coincides with Art Basel Miami where every street in Wynwood is bustling with artists, musicians, bloggers, street art murals, galleries, and art enthusiasts from all over the world. Art Basel Miami attracts thousands of visitors every year to party, socialise and celebrate its love of the arts. With Wynwood being such creative neighborhood it was ironic that the local schools did not have an art department or any art funding.

About the artist

RAW (Re-imaging the Arts in Wynwood) is a collaborative art project founded in 2013 by gallery owner Robert McKinney to raise funds for the art program at Jose De Diego Middle School in Wynwood, Miami. The project brought together thirteen prominent street artists to create limited edition works, with proceeds supporting art education in a neighborhood known for its vibrant creative scene but lacking school arts funding.

The project launched during Art Basel Miami 2013, when Wynwood's streets were filled with galleries, murals, and international art enthusiasts. Participating artists including Shepard Fairey, D*Face, Faile, Swoon, Aiko, and Ron English created limited edition prints and works specifically for the initiative. The collaborative nature of RAW allowed each artist to contribute their distinctive style while supporting a shared philanthropic goal, addressing the absence of art departments and funding in local schools.

RAW highlighted the contrast between Wynwood's thriving art district and the lack of arts education resources available to students in the same community. The project demonstrated how the commercial art world and street art culture could directly benefit local education. By coinciding with Art Basel Miami, RAW reached collectors and art enthusiasts from around the world, raising both funds and awareness for arts education in an underserved neighborhood.
